“A great of intelligence can be invested in ignorance when the need for illusion is deep.” – Saul Bellow

There must already be a blog intended as a humble homage to the likes of Sidney Hook, Melvin Lasky, Bellow and the great many other muscular democrats, liberal hawks and even cultural conservatives who maintain their exemplary legacy. And perhaps with occasional dollops of jazz, cinema, theatre, opera thrown in too. Or so I thought.

So what better time to start one, when new totalitarian temptations have emerged and the robust democratic internationalism personified by the much-missed Penn Kemble is under attack, from ‘realist’ and isolationist forces within our democracies as well as resurgent authoritarians abroad?

In any case, didn’t someone once say, “When intellectuals decide they must do something, they start a blog”?
